What We Ate Wednesday

31 Jul

Howdy, all! ¬†It’s Wednesday, and that means another edition of WWAW from your favorite twins ūüôā ¬†Thanks to Peas and Crayons for hosting!

This week, we had lots of leftovers on the menu! ¬†Usually at our house, dinner one night means leftovers for lunch the next day! ¬†This makes for an easy lunch on the crazy busy work days. ¬†Here’s a look at some of our delicious eats from this week:

2013-07-30 18.27.37

Vermicelli Pasta! ¬†That’s Italian for delicious (just kidding) and is a favorite around our house. ¬†We got the recipe from Pasta & Co, a local eatery that specializes in pasta salads and everything Italian.

2013-07-30 18.27.48

Pesto! ¬†This is turning into a pasta filled week for us. ¬†Luckily, we all enjoy whole wheat pasta and usually pasta is a side, not the whole focus of our meal–we have to get some veggies in there too! ¬†For those of you who are looking at the picture and are thinking, “Ick, it’s green!”, the green color comes from basil–so delicious!

2013-07-30 18.28.04

Don’t you hate it when your bananas go bad on you quickly? ¬†These two look like they may be retired soon into a smoothie. ¬†We really don’t like mushy bananas, but in smoothies they are perfect. ¬†Apparently there is a quick fix for keeping your bananas ripe longer–saran wrap around the stem! ¬†What do you think about that?

Overall, we have had a pretty healthy week, in terms of our food choices.  After our weekend of not-so-good-for-you food, it feels good to detox and get back on the healthy eating train!

What did you eat today?

Tuesday Twin Tips: How Having a Partner in Crime Can Help (and Derail) Your Diet

30 Jul

Everything is better in pairs, isn’t it? shoes, scoops of ice cream, sisters and of course, workout buddies! If you couldn’t tell already from the countless selfies of us ALL over Twin Eats, Haley and I are pretty close.

2013-07-27 09.19.17

We sleep in the same room, eat the same foods, workout together when we are both home from college. We have each other’s back. But, this kind of close isn’t without, ahem, issues, specifically in the health department. Yeah, we may eat the same foods, but who said anything about it being¬†good¬†food?

Bottom line: workout buddies can be both good news and bad news. ¬†Let’s start with the good news, shall we?

  • A workout buddy can provide you with just enough motivation to get out of bed for a workout. Believe me. It happened this weekend. Had it not been for Haley, I wouldn’t have gotten up at 6am on a Saturday morning.

  • A buddy can provide you with a benchmark. Something to work toward. I run faster when I see Haley (speed demon) up ahead. Even though I many not always be able to keep up. its something I can strive for. Who knows? Maybe, just maybe I’ll be able to someday.

And now for the bad news…

  • When your resolve is thin, a buddy can be the last thing standing between you and that brownie/bowl of ice cream/your dessert of choice. That means, when they cave, you cave. ¬†The one upside? You have someone to sympathize with when you regret it 30 minutes later.

  • The flip side of having someone to emulate is that there is a constant tendency to play the comparison game. Let’s be honest here. Even though Haley and I are technically identical twins, our bodies are not 100 percent identical! They will never be. But that is one of the things that makes us unique ūüôā

Who do you turn to for motivation? Do you have a workout buddy?

Terrific 21: That Was So Not On Our Diet

29 Jul

Hello Friends!

Seems like forever since we last spoke. Ok, so two days in the real world is nothing. Two days in the blog world? ETERNITY. We blame a busy weekend ūüôā

Here’s what we’ve been up to:

First baseball game of the season! Woo! It was a toasty 80 degrees here and we were in the sun for 3 full hours. #sunburn

And, because it was a family outing, we had to get a treat!

Dick’s is a Washington mainstay! Hamburgers, fries, a milkshake? That was so NOT on our diet! But it was a perfect end to a ball game.

Fun Fact: Macklemore just filmed one of his new videos at Dick’s the other day. Check out this article!

On to Terrific 21…

2013-07-27 09.19.17

FIrst of all, have we said how incredibly excited we are to finally turn 21? We can’t wait to make it to this next stage in life. ¬†And creating a healthy lifestyle is the best birthday gift we could ask for. ¬†Hanna only has two weeks left until she heads back (eek!) but she has seen some progress. ¬†All we can do is get better, right?

This week, we are focused on eating right, keeping our workouts focused and strong, and staying positive along the way.  Are you with us?  Let us know in the comments below how YOU are going to be healthy this week!

Photo Friday and Kitchen Experiments

26 Jul

We made it to Friday! Woo hoo! We’re keeping this post nice and short for you guys today.

Last night we were totally craving dessert, as ALWAYS. So we decided to do a little experimenting in the kitchen. Verdict? Bad idea.

Earlier in the summer we played around with the idea of making a single serving mug cake and it worked out..ok. Here’s the recipe we used. But, with us both tired from a long day of work we decided to wing it. As in no recipe this time.

Into the mix went:

–3 tbs flour

–1ish tbs sugar

–1ish tbs milk

–a little more than a dash of vanilla

–about 1/2 an apple

After 2 minutes in the microwave, this….

20130725-201641.jpgbecame this…

It was all around gross. The texture was off seeing as we didn’t add any fat (oil, butter) and we probably should have added a little baking powder. Also, Hanna was a little heavy-handed with the vanilla. But you know what? Live in learn is what we always say ūüôā

We are starting to get better at taking photos, so expect to see more on our blog!

Eats this week included some salads and a few (not pictured) treats. Hey, its summer! Live and learn ūüėČ

What are you up to this weekend?

Thursday Thoughts

25 Jul

Hello everyone! ¬†We’ve made it to Thursday! ¬†Today on my normal morning training run, I (Haley) just wasn’t feeling it–you know what I mean? ¬†Whether it was fatigue from a week of being super busy, not enough stretching and cool down (guilty!) or not spending enough quality time with my foam roller (best invention ever!) I just couldn’t get in the groove today ūüė¶

Its important to remember that it’s just one day, and tomorrow’s run will be better, right? ¬†I was reading some articles today on Runner’s World, and came across this article about running plateaus. ¬†You should check it out!

Also, I’m looking into getting some new running shoes this fall–my trusty Asics are definitely showing some wear on them. ¬†What are your favorite kinds of running shoes? ¬†Let’s hear your ideas!

We will be back tomorrow with an exciting Photo Friday!

What We Ate Wednesday

24 Jul

Howdy, friends! It’s another What We Ate Wednesday ūüôā This week, we have been really focusing on “clean eating”, and our meals have been pretty healthy. It’s amazing what good foods can do to improve your energy levels (no sugar crashes!) and wellbeing. Here’s a look at some of the highlights:

Tuesday Twin Tips: How to Survive Your First Week of Classes

23 Jul

Hello friends!

We’re starting an exciting new series called “Tuesday Twin Tips”. ¬†Basically, we want to share little bits of advice with you, in the hopes that you will benefit from it and apply our knowledge to your life! ¬†For today’s Tuesday Twin Tips (say that 5 times fast), we’re sharing a bit about what we have learned from our college experience so far.

How to Survive Your First Week of Classes

Summer is almost over! Can you believe it? I’m sure that’s not what you want to hear, but for those of us on a Semester schedule, pretty soon these long, summer days will be a distant memory. ¬†In light of this we thought we’d share a few tips we’ve learned along the way.

You’ve picked up your ID card, maybe walked around campus a few times? Not so bad, right? But now what?

Aim to do this the weekend before classes start:

Get up early: just do it! You’ll thank us later. While the rest of your peers are sleeping here’s what you are going to be doing:

1. Print off your class schedule OR save a snapshot of it on your phone. Note the building and classroom of each of your courses. Now take a little walk around campus. Pretend its Monday and walk around to each of your classrooms.

Why? When everyone else is scrambling to find their classrooms on the first day, you’ll already know where to go. The last thing you want to be is late (and potentially without a desk) on your first day.

2. Set more than one alarm for the first week. It does pay off to prepare.  You are bound to be awake more than asleep for the first few days. Sleep deprivation+excitement+life changes are bound to through off your schedule.

3. SMILE: Haley and I both went off to school not knowing ANYONE. 2 years later we both have a solid group of friends. How? Being friendly (obviously) is the best way to make friends.

So smile! If the person you are smiling at isn’t smiling back–well, they are not worth your time!

4. Have fun! These next 4 years of your life are going to be filled with life long memories and memorable learning opportunities.
