My First Half Marathon Experience!

I just finished my first HALF MARATHON!  After a summer of training, getting Hanna to run with me and some hiccups along the way, I completed it!

On Saturday, I went to the expo to grab my race bib, t-shirt and race info.  This was a pretty small race, so the expo wasn’t very exciting, but I started to feel pumped to be around so many of the runners that I would see during the race!

This morning, I woke up, got ready, then headed to the starting line to warm up with my trainer (my lovely boyfriend) before the race started at 9:30.  I was so nervous, but I could feel the energy of the runners, which was encouraging!  The course was beautiful and I felt so accomplished when I was finished.  Am I happy with my time? Yes!  Could I have done better? Yes!  I felt like I didn’t eat and drink enough before and during the race, which led to me being very low-energy at times.  Next time, I am going to be smart about my fueling.

Distance-wise, I really enjoy running 13.1.  The furthest that I had ever gone before today was 10 miles (which I love!), so I was proud of what I did today.

Next on my running bucket list? A full marathon, of course!

First Concert

Hello!

Hopefully you haven’t been able to tell, but I’ve (Hanna) been MIA the past few weeks. The past month has been absolute insanity. With learning to live on my own, being responsible for cooking my own food, paying bills/rent (what is this!!), an insane class load, and turning 21, I haven’t had much time for anything else!

Yesterday was one of those rare nights where I remember how worth it it really is to work your butt off 🙂

Haley’s Training Tips

This week marks my last week of training for the half marathon!  Remember when I first started running and I could barely go 3 miles?  Now, I’m running long distances and loving it!  This week is an easy week of running, to prepare my legs for the 13.1 miles that I will run on Sunday (look for my recap post then!).

Today, I am going to share some of the tips I have learned along that way–it’s been quite a journey!

Tip #1:  If you are running more than 6 miles, take water with you!  I use a nifty Fuel Belt system that keeps everything in place for me.

Tip #2:  Don’t get discouraged if you have a bad day.  There are plenty of times when I am just not feeling in the “groove”.  When that happens, I either shorten my run and instead do Pilates or another activity.  Staying active is what counts!

Tip #3:  Practice for Race Day.  I am picking out my outfit, packing my post-race bag and going on a small run/walk the day before to simulate the real deal.  That way, I can feel prepared.

Tip #4:  Use fuel and get to know your body.  I figured out that I run faster with the jolt of energy that comes from Hammer Gel (the Espresso flavor is life-changing).  Everyone is different, so find out what works for you and go for it!

Tip #5:  No matter what happens, have fun!  I try to stay positive as much as possible, so whether I am on a training run, or when I run this race come Sunday, I am going to enjoy every minute.  It may not be easy, but I have logged over 283 training miles for this race, which is an accomplishment on its own 🙂

It’s Haley, here for a weekend recap!  I am officially moved into my new apartment (yay!) and now I am preparing for school, which starts on Wednesday.  I can’t believe the school year has begun for us on the quarter system 🙂

College Tip #1:  Shoe organizer=lifesaver!  This is the first room out of my three bedrooms during college that my door can have an over-the-door shoe organizer!  From my heels to the Asics that I will be rockin’ come next Sunday for my HALF MARATHON (could I be any more excited?!?) this is the perfect thing to contain my clutter.

Junk Food Recovery

It’s no secret that Haley and I had a total binge weekend this past weekend. I mean hey, how often do you turn 21? I thought it would be appropriate to talk about how we, well, recovered from our weekend of junk food bliss.

Step 1: Water. Drink lots of it! Water is great at flushing toxins out of your body. Plus, it helps get rid of the bloat you feel after eating hamburgers and french fries, and cupcakes, and waffles, and fried chicken, and….you get the idea. We went a little overboard!

Step 2: Eat something healthy. Seems pretty logical, right? It totally helps!

Warning: The worst thing you can do after a junk food binge is to not eat at all. Believe me, that will just make matters worse (not to mention how bad that is for your body).  Although we were both tempted to forego our meals for the rest of eternity to make up for our diet embarrassment of a weekend, we didn’t!

In fact, here’s what we ate following “the binge”:

And finally, Step 3: GET OVER IT! Everyone binges once and a while. As long as you don’t make it a regular thing, no worries!

 

Cadence & Cupcakes

It’s Tuesday, and that means a workout update from Haley!

This week, Hanna and I are taking our workouts to the next level, as we ate so badly this weekend for our birthday.  Eating junk food all weekend and not eating regular meals…not healthy living.  #YOLO

I’m still training for my half marathon (It happens in TWO WEEKS!) and I had lots of opportunity to get in some runs during my birthday week with Hanna.  After looking though some of my favorite blogs, I came across this reading material from Janae and decided to give it a try.

I downloaded a metronome app on my phone and after setting the beat to 90 (like the article says), I matched my foot pattern to the cadence.  I really think it worked!  I am going to experiment this week with my Garmin to see what it can do for my mile times, but for now I felt like the pace made it easier on my knees, and kept my energy sustained.

Happy Birthday, Hanna and Haley!

We’re officially 21! It’s hard to believe that only 21 years ago were were so little…

Our birthday plans include hosting a party for our friends at Hanna’s house, complete with cupcakes and panini sandwiches. This will be a memorable night for sure!

Mason Jars make any party fun! Haley decorated these with paint pens, so we can have a unique way to remember celebrating our birthday together.
