Time for Yoga!

Hey There!

Are we excited that today is the last day of school before Thanksgiving Break?  Um yes! Even though Hanna and I have so much homework to do over the long weekend (really, teachers?!?) I am so ready to be home for a while.  Today, I thought I would share some of my yoga knowledge with you.  If you didn’t know this, I take a yoga class two days a week, and I absolutely love it!  It complements my running quite well, and is a great way to relax too.  So without further ado, grab your yoga mat and lets get going!

All About Arms

Hello all!

I don’t know about you, but I have been neglecting my arm workouts, like, big time.  I run and do abs (my favorite ab workout is Cassey’s Victoria Secret Abs video!) but I am slacking in doing weights on a regular basis.

…which is why I am turning over a new leaf!  As the weather gets colder, I find myself gravitating towards the gym for my morning workouts, so that I can get my cardio in on either the bike or tredmill.  So now, I have started to add weights into my routine, which looks something like this:

*Note:  I use 7.5-10 lb free weights and then set the machines to usually between 40-60 lbs, depending on how I feel

First, I use the Lat Pull Down machine (My trouble area, and therefore my favorite machine to use!).

With the free weights, I lift for quantity and quality, not trying to push myself to use a 20 lb+ weight when I know I can’t lift it.

I also love planks!  Not only do they strengthen the core, but they also provide a great workout for the arms.

Haley’s Training Tips

This week marks my last week of training for the half marathon!  Remember when I first started running and I could barely go 3 miles?  Now, I’m running long distances and loving it!  This week is an easy week of running, to prepare my legs for the 13.1 miles that I will run on Sunday (look for my recap post then!).

Today, I am going to share some of the tips I have learned along that way–it’s been quite a journey!

Tip #1:  If you are running more than 6 miles, take water with you!  I use a nifty Fuel Belt system that keeps everything in place for me.

Tip #2:  Don’t get discouraged if you have a bad day.  There are plenty of times when I am just not feeling in the “groove”.  When that happens, I either shorten my run and instead do Pilates or another activity.  Staying active is what counts!

Tip #3:  Practice for Race Day.  I am picking out my outfit, packing my post-race bag and going on a small run/walk the day before to simulate the real deal.  That way, I can feel prepared.

Tip #4:  Use fuel and get to know your body.  I figured out that I run faster with the jolt of energy that comes from Hammer Gel (the Espresso flavor is life-changing).  Everyone is different, so find out what works for you and go for it!

Tip #5:  No matter what happens, have fun!  I try to stay positive as much as possible, so whether I am on a training run, or when I run this race come Sunday, I am going to enjoy every minute.  It may not be easy, but I have logged over 283 training miles for this race, which is an accomplishment on its own 🙂

New Things for TwinEats and Let’s Workout!

Hey Everyone!

What a weekend we had!  Hanna is all settled at school and we made some exciting new changes to the blog!  There is nothing going on with the format or logo yet (that is to come), but we have settled on a plan about how we can create quality, interesting posts for our lovely readers (YOU!) to enjoy.  We came up with a schedule that will highlight what we think makes up healthy living, which is what we are all about.  On a weekly basis, expect to see workout highlights, food ideas, professional tips, a feature or two and a weekly round up to end the week right!

Today (aka Tuesday), its all about fitness!

NEW SHOES!  Nothing makes us more excited than new running shoes, right?  Haley’s shoes are shown above, but Hanna got some really cute Asics too! #asicslove

This weekend, I (Haley) had a great 10k run along the beach!  There were so many runners, which was very encouraging when I was getting tired.  My half marathon training is really ramping up–my long run is 9 miles this upcoming weekend!  I have a question for all you runners out there too–when I get close to the end of my long runs, my toes go numb and start to intensely hurt (as in, I-want-to-cut-my-foot-off-kind-of-hurt!).  Is it just fatigue?  Let me know in the comments below if you have had any experience dealing with foot issues 🙂

Tuesday Twin Tips: How Having a Partner in Crime Can Help (and Derail) Your Diet

Everything is better in pairs, isn’t it? shoes, scoops of ice cream, sisters and of course, workout buddies! If you couldn’t tell already from the countless selfies of us ALL over Twin Eats, Haley and I are pretty close.

We sleep in the same room, eat the same foods, workout together when we are both home from college. We have each other’s back. But, this kind of close isn’t without, ahem, issues, specifically in the health department. Yeah, we may eat the same foods, but who said anything about it being good food?

Bottom line: workout buddies can be both good news and bad news.  Let’s start with the good news, shall we?

  • A workout buddy can provide you with just enough motivation to get out of bed for a workout. Believe me. It happened this weekend. Had it not been for Haley, I wouldn’t have gotten up at 6am on a Saturday morning.


  • A buddy can provide you with a benchmark. Something to work toward. I run faster when I see Haley (speed demon) up ahead. Even though I many not always be able to keep up. its something I can strive for. Who knows? Maybe, just maybe I’ll be able to someday.


And now for the bad news…

  • When your resolve is thin, a buddy can be the last thing standing between you and that brownie/bowl of ice cream/your dessert of choice. That means, when they cave, you cave.  The one upside? You have someone to sympathize with when you regret it 30 minutes later.


  • The flip side of having someone to emulate is that there is a constant tendency to play the comparison game. Let’s be honest here. Even though Haley and I are technically identical twins, our bodies are not 100 percent identical! They will never be. But that is one of the things that makes us unique 🙂
